Etimologia

Il nome scientifico del genere deriva dall'unione delle parole mwewmullus (dal mwfalatino), mwfqmolle + mwfgichthys (dal mwfwgreco) mwgapesce.

Distribuzione e habitat

Queste specie sono diffuse nelle acque dell'mwgwIndo-Pacifico, dalle coste africane a quelle americane. Soltanto una specie, mwhamwhqMulloidichthys martinicus, è diffusa nell'mwhgOceano Atlantico occidentale, dal mwhwBrasile alla mwiaFlorida, soprattutto nel mwiqMar dei Caraibi.

Descrizione

Tutte le specie di mwjaMulloidichthys presentano un corpo allungato, piuttosto compresso ai fianchi, con testa arrotondata, profilo dorsale arcuato e ventre piatto. Le mwjqpinne sono corte e triangolari, (sono presenti due mwjgpinne dorsali), la mwjwcaudale è ampia, fortemente bilobata. Dalla bocca pendono due robusti barbigli mobili.
Le dimensioni variano dai 25 ai 40mwkq cm, secondo la specie.
